Willie Best (1916 - 1962)
(aka Sleep 'n' Eat)
Actor / comedian on screen and television; born in Mississippi. Generally playing slow, dim-witted characters, Willie was similar to Stepin Fetchit,
a controversial figure accused by many as "furthering the racist view of the black stereotype." I find it hard to believe that was his intent, but maybe he found his persona made it easier to find
work in a race-biased Hollywood. I also find it hard to believe that people would think that all black folks act the way he does. At any rate - black, green, blue or red - he made me laugh on many
occasions, and I enjoy his antics. He was a funny man.
