Jeanette MacDonald (1903 - 1965)
(birth year documented as 1901, 1902, 1903, 1906 and 1907!)
Given name: Jeanette Anna MacDonald; born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Legendary operatic soprano, actress and comedienne; one of the very best of the golden era. Became a star on Broadway before
moving to films in 1929, where she again quickly rose to stardom. Probably the best and most-loved soprano ever in U.S. films. She was first partnered with Maurice Chevalier, then with Nelson Eddy.
By the 1940s, she was on her own and playing opposite a variety of leading men, including her own husband, Gene Raymond.
Sadly, almost none of Jeanette's films have seen studio transfers to DVD as of this writing (November, 2007).

his image seemed to be that of a boozed playboy type, with a cigarette dangling from his lips and talking and singing as if he were a little tipsy. He was also famous for his long-running
television show which culminated in a series of "Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts" in the late 1970s and '80s, where he and his guests would pay tribute to a guest celebrity by telling jokes

Jovial operatic tenor / actor; born in Copenhagen, Denmark. At MGM for a number of films from about 1945 to about 1950. Lots of fun, and a truly gifted singer. One

Another classic scene comes in Two Sisters from Boston, in which Melchior is seen recording a gramophone record. Melchior leans against the recording director who pushes
him closer to the horn microphone during quiet passages, and pulls him back away from the microphone during louder passages. On playback, Melchior's dog, a "Nipper" look-alike, is

Ann Miller (1923 - 2004)
Given name: Lucy Ann Collier; born in Houston, Texas. "Tops in Taps" Ann Miller had one of the most successful careers in movie musicals. Though she seldom played lead roles, she always had a strong
second lead part. She always had plenty of screen time and never failed to leave an impression. And her tapping was unsurpassed. She could sing and dance and act. One of the best!

Glenn Miller Orchestra (1944 - )
The Glenn Miller Orchestra without Glenn Miller; the orchestra continued under the leadership of Tex Beneke (and others) after Glenn Miller's death. As far as I know, the only movie they appeared
in was The Glenn Miller Story, but they continued touring and recording for many years. Of course, there were many changes in personnel, but they continued on into at least the 1990s. See the links under
Glann Miller (above) for music.
